About
One sport. Five disciplines.
Modern Pentathlon is an Olympic sport combining fencing, swimming, obstacle course and laser run (a combined running and shooting event).
It is a sport llike no other, challenging athletes across speed, endurance, strength, skill and decision making. Whether you're discovering the sport for the first time or aiming for the international stage, there is a pathway into modern pentathlon.
The Disciplines
Fencing
Athletes compete in one-minute epee bouts, combining technique, tactics and quick decision making.

Swimming
A 100m freestyle event testing speed and endurance.

Obstacle Course Racing (OCR)
Modern Pentathlon's newest discipline, 8 obstacles across a 60-80m course testing strength, speed, coordination and agility.

Laser Run
Athletes alternate between 600m running laps and laser shooting in this handicapped finale. The event combines endurance, speed and accuracy under pressure with the first person to cross the line crowned the overall winner.

Modern Pentathlon NSW
Modern Pentathlon NSW is the state organisation responsible for developing and supporting modern pentathlon across New South Wales.
We work with athletes, coaches, officials, clubs, volunteers and partners to grow participation, develop athlete pathways and support NSW athletes competing at national and international level.
You don't need to be an expert in every discipline to get started. Whether you're a swimmer, runner, fencer, obstacle athlete or completely new to the sport, there is a pathway into modern pentathlon.
